“You know, if we get caught, we are going to be in so much hot water, we won’t be able to bail ourselves out, and by that I mean pay our bail, not use a bucket,” Beth said.
“Could you talk louder, Beth?” Lindsey asked. “I don’t think they heard you all the way down the hall. Besides I brought the printout of the books Trudi checked out, so if anyone asks, we’re merely getting our books back.”
“And we’re doing it this early because—”
“Librarians are like vampires; we don’t sleep,” Lindsey said.
“Oh, I can’t wait to see you use that one,” Beth said. “Kili Peters would have a field day if she heard that.”
It was early morning. Unable to sleep, Lindsey had biked over to Beth’s house to tell her what she and Sully had found out the night before.
Beth had been impressed but then asked the question that had been nagging Lindsey all night. “So if Trudi did take the map, where did she hide it?”
Lindsey remembered the last time she saw Trudi alive. It was the day she’d taken a restraining order out on Milton. It was also the day she’d checked out three books from the library.
Before they decided to visit Trudi’s office, Lindsey had stopped by the library and looked up Trudi’s record. The books were still on loan to her and they were all books about treasure maps, including Ferris La Verne Coffman’s 1957 Atlas of Treasure Maps. What could Trudi have wanted from that?
Lindsey and Beth had both concluded that there were only two possibilities where Trudi might have hidden the map, her house or her office. Since they didn’t want to break into her house, and because Trudi lived for her job, they both agreed her office was the likelier bet.
And so here they were in the town hall, hours before it actually opened, trying to break into Trudi’s office.
Lindsey was crouched on the floor while Beth kept watch. It was five o’clock and it wasn’t likely that anyone would be in the town hall until the cleaning crew arrived at six.
Beth was hopping from foot to foot, which was ruining Lindsey’s concentration.
“Beth, could you please stand still?” she asked.
“I can’t help it. I have to go to the bathroom.”
“No, you don’t, it’s just nerves,” Lindsey said. “Like when we were in grad school and you had to wait to make your presentation. You always had to go.”
“Can we talk about something else?” Beth asked. “This is so not helping to take my mind off of this.”
“Why don’t you do one of your story time poems,” Lindsey suggested.
Beth was silent for a moment and then she busted into “Boa Constrictor” by Shel Silverstein.
“‘Oh, I’m being eaten by a boa constrictor,’” she recited.
Lindsey smiled. Beth was always very dramatic when she performed this piece. With Beth occupied, Lindsey turned her attention back to the door.
